A Little History on Pretzels:
Bretzel is the German word for pretzel.
Pretzels were first made by monks in A.D. 610 and were first
called pretiolas.
They were given to children as a reward for learning their
prayers.  The three holes in a pretzel are said to represent
the trinity: God in three persons.  Pretzels began to
symbolize long life and God's Blessing. Since there were so
many German immigrants in Pennsylvania it is no wonder
there are several pretzel bakeries here.  An early traveler in
the late 1850's passing through Lititz, Pa., exchanged a
pretzel recipe for a hot meal.  The traveler moved on but the
recipe was given to Julius Sturgis, who in 1861 opened
America's first commercial pretzel bakery in Lititz.
On New Year's Eve in Lititz, Pennsylvania a giant pretzel is
dropped to celebrate the new year.
